Privacy policy
You don't need an account to use energy.org.uk, and reading the site, viewing live data or using a calculator doesn't ask for your name or email.

Calculators and postcodes
Most calculator answers are worked out in your browser. Answers that several tools share during your visit, such as your postcode, annual mileage or electricity use, are kept in your browser's session storage so you don't have to type them twice. They are cleared when you close the tab, or when you press reset on a tool. The electric car you choose in the EV tools is remembered in your browser's local storage until you reset it.
When a tool needs local information, the postcode you enter is sent from our server to the service that holds it: postcodes.io to find your region and council, the NESO Carbon Intensity API (outward part only, such as SW1A) for regional carbon data, and the government's Energy Performance Certificate service to find certificates for the home improvement shortlist. We don't store these lookups against you.
Messages you send us
When you use the contact form we store your name, email address, the reason you chose, any page link and your message in our database so that we can reply and follow up. To stop abuse we also store a one-way scrambled (hashed) version of your internet (IP) address, which lets us limit how many messages one connection can send in an hour.
The form sends us an email notification through our email provider, Resend. That email includes your message and contact details, plus your IP address, approximate country and browser details, which help us spot spam and investigate problems.
Analytics
We use Google Analytics 4 to count page views and understand which pages are useful. It records technical information such as approximate location, device type, referring page and pages viewed. We don't use it to identify you. See the cookie policy for the cookies it sets.
Why we collect it
To make the tools work, understand which information people find useful, and respond to questions and corrections.
We don't sell personal information and we don't run advertising networks on the site.
How long it is kept
Analytics data is kept for the standard Google Analytics retention period. Messages are kept only as long as we need them to handle your enquiry and any correction that follows.
Your rights
Under UK data protection law you can ask what information we hold about you, ask for it to be corrected or deleted, and object to its use. Contact us and we will respond.
You can block analytics cookies in your browser at any time. The site works without them.
