Smart meter not sending readings: what to check
A blank in-home display does not always mean your smart meter has stopped sending readings. Find out which part has the problem before you contact your supplier.

Check
What to check first
- Your bill. If it says "estimated" even though you have a smart meter, the meter may not be sending readings.
- The in-home display. A blank screen or no updates may only mean the display has lost its connection to the meter.
- Your meter type. Older first-generation (SMETS1) meters use a mobile network and can lose their smart features after a supplier switch. Newer SMETS2 meters use a dedicated secure network.
If the display has stopped
Smart Energy GB suggests plugging the display into a different socket and waiting for it to restart; it should reconnect within 24 hours. You can also try switching it off, unplugging the charger, then holding the on/off switch while plugging it back in.
If the meter is not sending readings
- Tell your supplier. It can often fix the problem remotely, for example by restarting the communications hub, which you cannot usually do yourself.
- Send manual readings meanwhile, so your bills stay accurate. Your meter still records your use even when it is not sending readings.
- Check your bills say "actual" or "smart" once it is fixed.
Take care
Important limitations
- A temporary loss of connection is often fixed remotely without you doing anything.
- Citizens Advice has a checker for whether your smart meter should work in smart mode with your supplier.
