Heating oil prices and buying a delivery

Heating oil is bought in deliveries, so the price you pay depends on the quote, the order size and the charges added to it. Compare quotes on the delivered price per litre, with VAT and every charge included.

What a quote is made of

  • The price per litre, which follows wholesale oil prices and changes often.
  • VAT, charged on domestic heating oil at the reduced rate of 5% for deliveries of up to 2,300 litres. Some quotes show prices without VAT.
  • Delivery or small-order charges, which can make a small order much dearer per litre.
  • The order size. Larger orders usually cost less per litre, up to what your tank can safely hold.

The oil and LPG quote checker puts quotes on the same basis: delivered pence per litre, and the cost of each kWh of heat.

National prices are not local quotes

The heating oil price on our pages is the official UK monthly average, from government statistics. It shows the trend, but prices vary by area, supplier and order size, so your quote may be higher or lower. Use it as a reference, not as a price you can expect to pay.

Check

What to check first

  • How much is in your tank, and how much it can safely take.
  • Whether each quote includes VAT and all delivery charges.
  • The delivery window: standard deliveries are usually cheaper than urgent ones.
  • Access for the tanker, and the hose distance to your tank.

Do

Practical next steps

  1. Get at least two quotes for the same number of litres.
  2. Compare them in the quote checker.
  3. Order before the tank is low, so you are not forced into an urgent delivery.
  4. Ask whether a local buying group offers a real saving after any membership fee.
  5. Keep the delivery note, and check the tank level after delivery.

Take care

Important limitations

  • There is no reliably cheapest month: oil prices can rise or fall at any time.
  • The quote checker uses the same oil energy content and boiler efficiency as our heat pump tools. Your boiler may be more or less efficient.
  • Oil boilers and tanks need regular servicing and checks; see oil tanks, boilers and safety.
