Radiator checker

Check whether a room's radiators could work with a heat pump.

Room size (metres)
Radiator size (millimetres)
Radiator type

Look down from the top of the radiator to count panels and fins.

How well insulated is the room?

Probably undersized for low-temperature heating

Estimated room heat requirement

About 1.3 kW

On a cold winter day

Estimated radiator output at lower flow temperature

About 0.4 kW

With 45°C water

A proper heat-loss calculation is required before installation.

How this estimate works

Room heat need is the floor area times a typical heat loss for the insulation level, for a room with a normal ceiling height kept at 21°C on a cold day.

Radiator output uses typical catalogue figures for each type and size, then the standard method for how output falls when the water is cooler. A heat pump usually runs radiators at around 45°C rather than the 70°C or so a boiler uses, so the same radiator gives roughly a third of the heat.

Real rooms differ: windows, outside walls and draughts all matter. Treat this as a first check only.
