What these totals include

Each figure adds up the installed capacity of REPD planning records with that status. A wind farm can have several records (phases, extensions or re-applications), so a record is not always a separate farm, and these sums are not an official total of commissioned capacity. Planned covers projects with consent or an application submitted. The live figure is all wind generation in Great Britain, onshore and offshore together: Elexon does not separate offshore output in that feed.

Projects

85 of 100 listed projects have a location in REPD. Locations are REPD site coordinates and may be a planning or landfall point rather than the turbines.

Fixed-bottom and floating wind

Most offshore turbines in British waters stand on foundations fixed to the seabed, such as steel monopiles or lattice jackets, which suit shallower water. Floating turbines sit on buoyant platforms moored to the seabed, so they can be placed in deeper water further from shore. Almost all of the operational capacity above is fixed-bottom.

Floating projects in the database:

  • • Kincardine Offshore Windfarm: 50 MW, operational
  • • Hywind Scotland Pilot Park (Hywind 2) Demonstrator: 30 MW, operational
  • • Fraserburgh - Buchan Floating Wind Project: 1,000 MW, planning application submitted
  • • Erebus - Floating Offshore Wind Demonstration Project: 100 MW, planning permission granted
  • • Pentland Floating Offshore Wind Farm: 100 MW, planning permission granted
  • • TwinHub (previously called Wave Hub Floating Wind): 32 MW, planning permission granted
  • • Dounreay Trì Floating Wind Demonstration: 10 MW, under construction
  • • Culzean Floating Wind Pilot: 3 MW, planning permission granted
