Charging an electric car without a driveway

You can own an EV without a driveway. Your main options are public charging, workplace charging and, where your council allows it, a cross-pavement home charging solution.

Cross-pavement charging

A cross-pavement charging channel lets a charging cable run safely through a purpose-built channel in the pavement, rather than lying across the footway.

Do not simply run an unprotected charging cable across a public pavement.

Your local council decides whether channels are allowed, and its rules and approval apply. Not every council offers them.

Government grant

Up to £500

Eligible households with on-street parking can get up to £500 towards an eligible home chargepoint installed with a cross-pavement solution. Available until 31 March 2027, subject to eligibility and government rules. Not everyone qualifies.
