Electric showers heat water as it flows, so they draw their rating while running.

About 1.5 kWh per shower, 548 kWh a year. Figures are examples: change them to match your appliance.

How these figures are worked out

Cost = power in kW × hours used × share of time at full power × unit rate. For appliances that use a set amount each time, such as a washing machine cycle, we use energy per cycle instead. For fridges and freezers we use the yearly figure from the energy label.

Each appliance starts with example figures. Open “Change assumptions” on any appliance to enter its wattage, energy per cycle or energy-label figure. The rating plate, energy label, instructions or a plug-in energy monitor will give a better figure for your own appliance.

Appliances with a thermostat, such as heaters, ovens and immersion heaters, draw full power only part of the time. That is what “time at full power” is for. Set it to 100% only for something that never switches off while in use.

Monthly figures are a twelfth of the yearly figure. Standing charges are not included because you pay them whatever you use.
